BMW likely to use KERS hybrid on next generation M5

The crew at BWM’s M division are all about performance and extracting all of it that they can from run-of-the-mill bimmers. However, they are not immune to the realities of the modern world and the demands for improved efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. With the X5 M and X6 M launching this summer, the next big project for the team is a new M5 based on the F07 5-Series coming later this year. The M5 won’t actually launch until 2011 but, like their counterparts at AMG and quattro GmbH, the M team will likely downsize the engine compared to today’s model and very likely add some sort of KERS hybrid drive system. In all likelihood, the 5.0-liter V10 in today’s M5 will be replaced by a high output version of the new 4.4-liter V8 like the one in the X6 M. However, this 555 hp monster will probably be backed up by the mild hybrid system that will be installed in the 755iH late this year. Unlike other applications, BMW may add a power on demand button of some sort that uses the available energy in the battery to provide instant boost. Rumor has it, BMW is also considering adding two cylinders to make the V8 a V10 and then using cylinder deactivation to improve mileage. This seems a much less likely scenario since the increased torque of the V8 compared to the current V10 combined with the hybrid power should provide plenty of extra performance at a lower weight than adding more cylinders. UK will spend £25 million ($40 million U.S.) on huge electric car test program

Mitsubishi iMiEV - click above for high res iamge gallery The electric vehicle money is flowing everywhere. Following the U.S. DOE’s announcement yesterday , the UK has announced it will spend £25 million ($40 million) on a large project to get EVs and “ultra-low carbon vehicles an everyday feature of life on Britain’s roads in less than five years.” Automotive partners include Ford , MINI , smart, Mitsubishi and Toyota. More information available at the links and in the press releases after the jump. While EV fans here on AutoblogGreen will undoubtedly be happy to hear this news, there was a line in the Automotive News Europe (subs req’d) write-up of the announcement that doesn’t exactly bode well. The automakers brought their vehicles together at the Guildhall in London for the day, which gave a reporter the chance to hear what the i MiEV sounds like: “When the demonstrator started the car and pressed the accelerator, it did not rev nor growl. It sounded like a toy.” Really, a toy? Spy Shots: This is your Aston Martin Rapide

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Sports/GTs , Aston Martin A Car magazine reader has photographed the Aston Martin Rapide looking like it could have come off a dealer lot. The snapper also peeped the inside, which he said has a full-length console a la the Mercedes CLS to create four distinct seating positions. Aston has, however, said that those rear seats are for “children or two adults on shorter journeys.” The slinky black number also sports a serious set of pipes out back that we expect to put out a beautiful soundtrack. And thank goodness the car has a hatch like the Vantage, which means — in a first for current Aston Martins — it could have a proper trunk. Like the kind you can actually put things in. Baden-Württemberg, Germany gets its first public hydrogen filling station

The first publicly-accessible hydrogen filling station in the German state of Baden-Württemberg opened this week at Stuttgart Airport. The station is being operated by OMV and was built in cooperation with Daimler and chemical supplier Linde. The new station utilizes Linde’s ion-compressor technology and supports both 350 BAR and 700 BAR filling. Aside from Honda’s FCX Clarity, which stores hydrogen at 350 BAR, most other automakers have moved to 700 BAR storage which allows for a greater range. The new station is the first such project for OMV, which operates 400 gas stations in Germany. Daimler is planning to launch low volume series production of the B-Class F-Cell later this year. Linde produces the hydrogen for this station from steam reformation of natural gas which cuts CO 2 emissions 30 percent compared to modern diesel engines. Linde is also working on a new process to produce hydrogen from biogenic feedstocks. A pilot production facility using this process should be coming online later this year. The Daimler press release is after the jump. Trying to find the upside to Tesla-Daimler deal

Elon Musk and Dr. Thomas Weber with the Tesla Roadster and the smart ed Not everyone think the big Daimler-Tesla deal announced last week is a win-win. In fact, Jay Yarow over at Business Insider is trying to figure our how either side benefits from Daimler’s estimated $50+ million investment in Tesla. Yarow’s basic argument is that Tesla didn’t get enough to save itself and Daimler “picked up a company that has got one product with weak sales and is about to be saddled with enormous debt.” Yarow also thinks that demand for Tesla’s cars isn’t exactly staggering, and it won’t get better because there will be a lot more competition in the all-EV market, a market that Tesla currently dominates by default, in a few years. Based on the excitement this deal generated, though, it’s clear that Daimler got something for its money. Association with one of the leaders in the electric car field is an obvious plus, and there’s got to be technology involved in the deal that Daimler wants. Yarow does admit that he’s not seeing the whole picture, writing, “We must be missing something, though, because in this market, car companies don’t let $50 million walk out the door for no good reason.” Gallery: Daimler Tesla press conference [Source: Business Insider ] Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors , Green Daily , Daimler Trying to find the upside to Tesla-Daimler deal originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 24 May 2009 11:11:00 EST. Car Dealers are Fighting The Hammer as Chrysler and GM Send Out Pink Slips To Retailers

For all the talk in the last six months about the billions being spent to cushion the U.S. auto companies and suppliers, very little has been said or done to consider the plight of the car dealers who are being told in this process that they will be run out of business with not too many people caring about soft landings. On Thursday, GM is widely expected to send out termination notices to some 2,000 of its 6,000 dealers, letting them know that the company plans to stop distributing new cars to them in the near future. Chrysler, already in Chapter 11, is also expected to terminate more than 1,000 of its 3,100 dealer agreements. Some estimates put the job loss at around 200,000. It’s no wonder that Congress has not had dealers on its radar as much as the car companies themselves. As bad as GM’s image is with many carbuyers, the image of car dealers with just about everyone falls below lawyers and even journalists when it comes to public esteem. Let’s face it. Most deserve the reputation. “How about the rust-proofing? The extended warranty? Of course we have to charge you the advertising fee.” Huh…you mean I have to pay for your newspaper ad that got me in here? Dealers are already going out of business at a record clip in this recession. But it is going to get worse as Chrysler, for example, moves to trim over 1,000 dealers and General Motors, if it files for Chapter 11, is looking to trim more than that. The problem is this: GM and Chrysler, as well as Ford, have dealer networks that were built for when the three companies had a combined market share of 90%. Today, it is about 45%-50%. Many urban and suburban markets have too many Ford and Chevy dealers. They wind up competing against each other on price, while there is typically only one Toyota or Honda dealer in the same market. It also makes the U.S. brand stores less profitable. Less profit means fewer and less frequent facility upgrades. That’s why some Chevy and Chrysler dealerships look older and shabbier than Toyota dealers in the same market area. GM, Ford, and Chrysler have for years helped dealers buy out their rivals in the same market. But the process is slow. And for GM and Ford, the time is now for trimming costs, and that means the dealer network as well as headquarters head count, slow selling models, inefficient real estate, and under-performing brands. Many dealers resist selling for a number of reasons. Many are second- and third-generation families that own the dealership. Even as sales of new cars plunge at these companies, these dealerships make most of their revenue and profit from selling used cars and in the service and parts department. Still, without a flow of new-car sales, most dealership targeted by GM and Ford will fold for lack of new customer traffic. Usually, state franchise laws prevent a company from terminating a dealer except when the company can prove cause. But Chapter 11 allows GM and Chrysler to cut the dealers without much fear of the courts or cost. Back in 2000, GM embarked on a project to kill off the Oldsmobile network, and its cost the automaker by some estimates around $2 billion in payments to dealers. GM’s not going through that again…on the cost side, anyway. On Thursday, Congress will get an earful from the auto dealers’ main lobby, as well as dealers themselves. More than 100 new-car dealers will meet face-to-face with members of the House and Senate to ask them to urge President Obama’s auto task force to slow down plans to rapidly reduce GM’s and Chrysler’s dealer networks. “A rapid cut of dealers is a bad idea,” says John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, the trade group that organized the dealer fly-in. “This would have adverse effects on the auto industry and hurt an already struggling U.S. economy. “It will result in another 200,000 Americans losing their jobs,” McEleney added. “State and local governments will lose millions of dollars in auto sales tax revenue that is essential for economic recovery. “We’re not arguing against dealer consolidation,” McEleney says. “Our concern is with the accelerated time frame. Keep in mind that dealers are not a cost center for their manufacturers. Dealers are an automaker’s main source of revenue.” NADA launched an ad campaign in the form of an open letter from McEleney to President Obama questioning why his auto task force is demanding drastic cuts in the number of U.S. dealers. Full-page print ads were published in The Washington Post, Politico, Automotive News, Roll Call, Chicago Tribune, and Chicago Sun Times. For all the bad press car dealers get for their hardball tactics in the showroom, they are also the backbone of a lot of cities and towns when it comes to charity support, kids’ sports teams, etc. Chalk all that up to local marketing, but it is still significant. My Little League baseball team was sponsored by Norris Chevrolet, which I heard just folded in Westfield, N.J. And I was a local and regional winner of Punt, Pass, and Kick, sponsored by local Ford dealers. Up to now, dealers haven’t gotten much airtime in the debate over saving the U.S. auto industry, though several members of the black caucus expressed concern for minority-owned car dealers during the November and December bailout hearings. But that will change Thursday. Why has Congress not shown much interest so far in the plight of dealers, despite the fact that many dealers are big political donors? Maybe too many of them paid for rust-proofing.

VIDEO: Driving a Tesla-powered Smart

Tesla-powered smart fortwo Click above for a hi-res gallery When Tesla launched its amazing Model S a while back, it wasn’t the only Tesla-powered machine supplying rides to attendees . Also ferrying guests about a short circuit (so to speak) was a smart fortwo imbued with a Tesla-engineered drivetrain, fruit of its effort to supply Daimler with battery packs for 1,000 smart eds. Our friend Doug, of Tesla Motors Club fame, was at the event and went for a ride in the diminutive one, armed with a video camera to record the ride, the results of which we are happy to share with you after the break. Because of the nature of the event, there was no demonstration of heart-stopping acceleration or sure-footedness through a slalom, which is somewhat disappointing. The car would have been capable of making a lasting impression given the chance, outfitted, as it was, with the motor and gear box 1.0 from the Tesla Roadster. Perhaps more interesting than the ride, at least for some electro-geeks, are some of the pictures Doug took of the battery pack on display that will go into the electric smarts. Encased in metal and painted black, the battery looked much smaller than a Roadster pack and is said to be able to power the fortwo up to 100 miles. Check out the pics in the gallery below and don’t forget to hit the jump for some smart video action. 2009 Auto Shanghai: If at First You Don’t Succeed…

In 2006 Geely made history by becoming the first Chinese automaker to exhibit vehicles at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The cars were terrible — poorly designed and badly made — but that didn’t stop Geely announcing it planned to start selling them in the U.S. in 2008. Those plans unraveled when the Geelys failed American crash and emissions tests, however. Geely’s GT and GE are still hard to take seriously. The GT, star of Geely’s line up at the 2008 Beijing Show, is a hideously overblown coupe. The GE is a laughable Rolls-Royce Phantom knock-off, right down to the winged mascot on the giant grille. But look past these two cartoon cars, and you’ll see something truly remarkable: a completely new model line up. There are no fewer than 22 brand new Geelys on display at Auto Shanghai. Not even at the peak of its power did GM reveal that many new models at once. Geely, China’s first independent automaker is hugely ambitious — founder Li Shufu is on record as saying he wants two-thirds of the company’s production to be exported outside China. And it’s clear from their size and design at least six of the new Geelys may be aimed at the American market, where they could be sold under the company’s new Emgrand brand name. The Emgrand EX925 is a large SUV that rides on a wheelbase 3-in. longer than a Honda Pilot’s, and has three row seating for up to eight occupants. It’s powered by either a 146 hp 2.2L four cylinder diesel or 148 hp 2.4L four cylinder gas engine, driving through either a six speed manual or seven speed dual clutch manual. It is available as a rear drive model, or with all-wheel drive. The Emgrand ET925 is basically a dual-cab pickup — Geely’s first ever pickup — built on the same GCT architecture as the SUV. Most of the cab structure and sheet metal forward of the B-pillar appear to be shared with the SUV, as are the powertrains and transmissions. Both vehicles would likely need an engine transplant to please U.S. buyers, however — weighing over 4400lb, neither is going to be a stellar performer. The Emgrand EV825 is Geely’s first MPV . It’s built on a front drive platform that it shares with the Emgrand EX825 crossover. Overall length is 190.5in, and it rolls on a 112.2in wheelbase. Powertrains include a 160hp 2.4L four cylinder gas engine, and a 134hp 2.0-liter diesel, driving through a six speed manual transmission. A seven speed dual clutch transmission will be available as an option with the 2.4-liter engine. The interior can be configured for six, seven, or eight passengers. The EV825 is scheduled to start production in late 2010, as is the EX825 crossover, which shares its powertrain and transmission configuration. The EX825 is almost exactly the same size as a Honda Pilot, and has seating for seven. Geely also showed two Emgrand cars that seemed sized for the U.S. The EC825 is a plain looking Camry-sized sedan built on the same front drive platform as the EX crossover and the EV minivan, and sharing the same powertrain. It’s scheduled to go into production December this year. The Emgrand EC718 is a front drive Honda Civic-sized car that is available as a five door hatchback model or a four door sedan. Available engines are 1.5L and 1.8L fours, with 136 hp and 107 hp respectively, driving through a five speed manual transmissions. All six Emgrand models need work before they are saleable in the U.S. — they need more powerful engines, and standard automatic or dual clutch manual transmissions. Fit and finish of the early build cars on the show stand looked considerably better than that of the cars at Detroit in 2006, but still needs to be improved significantly. But I was struck by not only the raw ambition these vehicles displayed, but also the obvious determination of Geely to improve them. I still remember the first Hyundai I ever drove — a 1986 Excel. Its interior stank like a sumo wrestler’s jockstrap, the front left hand turn signal kept falling off, and it looked like it had been built in the dark. It was a joke. But no-one laughs at Hyundai now. And within ten years we may not be laughing at Geely, either.
